My wife and I have four children and we live in our kitchen. It’s where my kids do their homework and where we eat, dance, listen to music, run into one another, make messes and all the other things a big family does. What we want is a space we can all be in, but not feel that we are stepping on each other’s toes, a space that will allow us to entertain guests and also function for our family.

Now, as someone who loves to design and build, in the digital and real world, what if I worked through the blueprints for my new kitchen and hired a series of contractors to implement that work? I would give them explicit directions for the floor plan, colors, lighting, materials and placement of appliances.

And here is the thing: if they built it 100% to my specifications, there is a high probability I would not like the result.

I have no experience designing kitchens to achieve a specific feel, interaction and flow. What is needed here is an experienced architect who can talk my wife and me through these scenarios and let us know how we can create the environment we seek within our budget. This architect’s guidance, based on deep expertise, would still provide specifics, but would more likely result in something we would enjoy.
