Sellers Business Valuation Seller Articles Seller FAQ

Once you learn what a valuation is, and that you should get one before you go to sell your business, you will probably ask “Where can I get a valuation done?”

Great question.

Brokers, merger & acquisition (M&A) advisors, appraisers, and valuation specialists usually perform business valuations.

At MidStreet, we perform countless business valuations every year and remain up to date on what certifications and experience a specialist needs to perform one correctly.

To help you get a clearer idea of who can value your business, we will cover the top five business valuation companies in the United States. We have compiled this list based on four main criteria: their accreditations, experience, the type of valuations they perform, and the price of their valuations

Let’s hop in.

How We Determined The Top Business Valuation Companies

In order to compile the list of the top business valuation companies in the U.S., we evaluated them on the criteria below.

1. Their Accreditations

In order to be recognized as a professional valuation specialist, a specialist should have one of the following approved certifications: Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA), Certified Business Appraiser (CBA), Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV), Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA), Accredited Valuation Analyst (AVA), or Business Certified Appraiser (BCA).

2. Their Experience

In the context of fair market valuations, it is important that valuation specialists have experience with selling businesses and/or are familiar with the market. This allows them to value a company similarly to how it would sell on the open market.

3. The Type of Valuations They Perform

Valuation companies that perform business valuations in compliance with SBA SOPs are familiar with approved valuation techniques. If they perform SBA-approved valuations in addition to other types of valuations, it is usually safe to assume that they will be able to value your business properly.

4. The Price of Their Valuations

Not all valuation companies post their pricing because the price of valuations can differ depending on the type of valuation, the size of the business being valued, and its industry. However, there are some brokers that will provide free business valuations to business owners who are considering using their firm.

NOTE

If you pay $5,000 for a business valuation and receive it back the same day, you are most likely not getting your money's worth. Valuing businesses properly takes time, even when performed by an experienced valuation professional.
